Earlier today I was talking to someone I work with and they made the observation that the way employees treat customers is often a direct reflection of the way managers treat employees. Put another way, if managers treat employees badly, in all probability those same employees are going to treat the company’s customers badly.
The implication here is that if you’re a manager and you’re not happy with how your direct reports treat their customers (whether those are internal customers or actual paying clients) you probably need to take a good look in the mirror. If employees consistently treat customers poorly then you probably have a management problem, not an employee problem.
Boom! Hit the nail on the head right there.
How does the saying go? “Sh*t flows downhill.”
